William J. Royal Jr. William J. Royal Jr. is an experienced trial lawyer specializing in complex litigation. Bill is hailed yearly as one of the “Massachusetts Super Lawyers” by Boston Magazine, since 2005. Bill has a strong reputation among clients and the legal community for a careful and empathetic approach outside the courtroom and for exceptional results in court victories and settlements.
As a tenacious litigator who relishes mastering details that often prove determinative, Bill’s ready command of the law and the facts makes him uncommonly effective against opponents with or without ‘deep pockets.’ Time and again, Bill
demonstrates the value of thorough preparation and agility that can deliver successful, out-sized results for his clients.
Bill is an acknowledged expert in business and employment law and often surpasses his clients’ expectations: clients may not realize their rights, whether it be in the context of wrongful termination, separation agreements,
disputes among business partners and shareholders, or in countless other areas. For example, corporate restructurings can lead to the separation of senior executives who have been integral to the success of their businesses. In these situations, it is important that tough and attentive review and negotiations capitalize on the value contributed by the senior executive, in the context of applicable law and regulations.
In addition to employment matters, Bill’s areas of expertise include:
- Serious personal injury and tort matters
- Diverse business disputes
- Trust and estate disputes, including breaches of fiduciary duty
- Actions to disregard corporate form seeking to impose personal liability
Bill has achieved consistently strong results for a diverse range of clients including individuals, trust beneficiaries, banks and investment firms, small and mid-size enterprises, and senior executives of both publicly traded and closely held companies.
Bill gives individualized attention to the most important concerns of each client – whether it be regarding a family trust dispute, an injury to themselves or their family, or a dispute in the workplace.
Preparing every case as a trial attorney, Bill is ready to advocate his client’s position before a judge or jury. Courts are his preferred venue whenever there is the potential to win judgments that are larger than can be achieved in settlement.
Bill is a qualified expert witness regarding tort and legal malpractice issues. He is also a certified mediator who fully understands the opportunities for Alternate Dispute Resolutions (ADR) where appropriate. However, Bill recognizes that greater rewards are often only possible through the courts.
Bill earned a B.A. from Brown University in 1973 and a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 1977. Following law school, he began his legal career on Wall Street. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1978 before returning to practice in Boston.
Bill was elected to the Planning Board in Marblehead, MA where he served from 1996 to 1998.
Bill has advocated in the United States First Circuit Court of Appeals; Massachusetts Federal District Court; Massachusetts Superior, Probate and Family, and District Courts; and the Supreme Judicial Court and Appeals Court.
